WhatsUp Gold is Just What the Doctor Ordered for Dell Computers Compare IT consultant Eric Osterholm to a doctor making a house call and you ll find his little black bag filled with best-of-class diagnostic software tools. With more than 17 years experience in the computer, networking, and telecommunications industry, some of Osterholm s favorite items in his black bag are software tools from Ipswitch, including WhatsUp Gold.

When computer giant Dell Computers turned to Collective Technologies for assistance in discovering and diagramming its clients internal systems, Collective Technologies turned to IT expert Osterholm who turned to Ipswitch and WhatsUp Gold.

WhatsUp Gold is a popular cost-effective network monitoring, discovery, and diagramming solution for network-dependent businesses of all sizes worldwide. It provides a detailed look into a network system and enables administrators to better understand and manage network resources. Osterholm says that the key factor in choosing WhatsUp Gold was its flexibility in graphically mapping a network.

Responsible for generating an accurate and easy-to-read network topology map that includes critical server locations during every assessment, Osterholm says, This map serves as the basis for later traffic analysis and consolidation considerations. I use WhatsUp Gold s discovery and mapping capabilities to create detailed physical layer maps, which serve a vital role in graphically supporting my findings. Without this tool, it would take me much longer to complete the discovery and analysis portions of my assessments; WhatsUp Gold has cut the time required by 50 percent or better.

Over the years, Eric has observed that WhatsUp Gold technology always impresses the client s IT staff, but the business managers, who are concerned with the bottom line, are always happy to see that the total cost of ownership is low.

Prior to using WhatsUp Gold, Osterholm had deployed both HP OpenView NNM and CA-Unicenter products, but says, I found both too complex to implement. Plus, they re too costly to maintain and training is expensive for staff.

Osterholm first discovered WhatsUp Gold nearly a decade ago after he downloaded an evaluation version of the product. Impressed with the software s reliability, user-friendly functionality, and its reasonable price tag, he s been an avid user and proponent of Ipswitch products ever since. Through Collective Technologies and Osterholm & Associates, he has utilized WhatsUp Gold for such clients as CyberTrader, VisionWeb, and the United States Navy.

I started using WhatsUp Gold at Motorola back in 1995 for mapping our internal networks, and using those diagrams to propose changes to our network configurations. Today, I continue to use WhatsUp Gold in my work with all clients. I can rapidly discover and map out various details of their network architecture and server locations, says Osterholm.

Working as a computer consultant means that Eric has to be an expert in many areas. He explains, My clients trust me and have faith in my performance, so I have to trust and have faith in the performance of the products I use. I trust Ipswitch because they have some of the best tools on the market.

For Osterholm, WhatsUp Gold, is just what the doctor ordered. It has, and will continue to be, an important diagnostic tool in his black bag when making critical IT house calls.
