WhatsUp Gold helps Hudson RCI keep network devices running properly -- at a third of the cost of other monitoring solutions.
When a company has 5000 employees based in 11 locations throughout the world, the IT staff has to stay on its toes to make sure the global-area-network stays up and running. With that many users, the staff is apt to receive a call at any time when connectivity problems occur.
It puts us behind in the game when a user calls and lets us know there s a problem, said Robert Garvito, Citrix Administrator for Hudson RCI, a privately-held medical manufacturing firm that has specialized in disposable products for respiratory care and anesthesia for the past 50 years. In these cases, the problem is already preventing someone from doing their work. We have to drop everything we re doing so we can get them back up and running immediately.
To meet this challenge Garvito turned to WhatsUp Gold from Ipswitch, having used the product for two years with another company. When it came time to choose a solution to proactively let us know about device problems, we did not even consider other alternatives. WhatsUp Gold made the choice an easy one.
Garvito works with a staff of six IT professionals that oversees six Hudson RCI locations in North America that process medical-product orders. Garvito s staff monitors close to 60 servers and 80 other network devices such as routers and switches. Each person on the staff manages a specific set of devices and receives notification on their cell phone from WhatsUp Gold any time a problem occurs.
WhatsUp Gold monitors whether the servers and devices properly handle the company s main operational application. The program was built with SAP while Citrix software handles connections to the host application. The program runs our company from manufacturing to production to sales orders to payroll, Garvito said. We typically have 275 concurrent users so it s in use all the time.
WhatsUp Gold particularly helps Garvito and his staff when a problem occurs overnight. The software notifies the appropriate person, and we can start working on the problem right away, Garvito said. Usually, we can fix the problem before employees from that location report to work.
This is a stark contrast to how things proceeded prior to Hudson RCI s purchase of WhatsUp Gold. It used to be that we would not know about overnight problems until we arrived for work, Garvito said. By that time, we would have a thousand other things going on, and it would usually take us until the middle of the day to fix the problem. Employees using that device would lose half a day of production.
The two features of WhatsUp Gold that impress Garvito the most are its cost and ease-of-use. We did not even consider another solution, Garvito said. We knew that no other product could come close to the cost while still making it easy for us to identify problems with our servers and network devices.
WhatsUp Gold cost Hudson RCI less than $2K -- about a third of the cost of other solutions. Any other solution would have cost at least between five and six thousand dollars, Garvito said. But the software s ease-of-use is also a big factor. We did not need any special training other than a couple of short phone calls to Ipswitch Technical Support. WhatsUp Gold s graphical-based, point-and-click functioning makes it easy for anyone to use right out of the box.
WhatsUp Gold plays an integral part in keeping our business profitable Garvito concluded. We need to keep placing and fulfilling orders, and without WhatsUp Gold we would fall behind in our commitment to our customers. I highly recommend WhatsUp Gold to any company looking for a low-cost solution with robust functionality, to monitor its servers and network devices.
