Millipore Purifies Its Business Process with WhatsUp Gold

For corporate MIS outfits creating scripts and running reports around the clock, keeping servers up and running is mission critical. Because servers occasionally go down, minimizing downtime can be a competitive plus - and can avoid the spiral of wasted time and effort it sparks. Millipore, a leading manufacturer of purification products headquartered in Bedford, Mass., has prided itself on giving its 4,000 sales reps a technical edge by pumping daily to their desktops around the globe updated data from an Oracle database via a Lotus Notes mail server. But unnoticed overnight server crashes too often snarled the process, needlessly aggravating the financial department and costing developers precious trouble-shooting time (and expense) the next day playing catch-up.

Millipore found a reliable, easy-to-manage solution to purify its MIS process: WhatsUp Gold from Ipswitch, Inc. This easy-to-install, low-overhead network monitoring tool has been configured to display a graphical alarm when a server fails, trigger sirens at the help desk, e-mail MIS personnel instantly to help them track the problem and pump out back-up alpha pages every five minutes to second-level support and to management within the hour. Millipore not only solved its Notes server downtime dilemmas with WhatsUp Gold, but now uses this flexible tool to monitor Windows NT and Web servers as well. "It surpassed my expectations," said intranet operations manager Rick Schatzl.
