| | Satellite network monitored by WhatsUp Gold
Netrinsic Ltd. has implemented Ipswitch s WhatsUp Gold to keep an eye on its satellite network, minimizing outages caused by weather conditions and solar flares.
I looked at a variety of network monitoring solutions that on the whole were too expensive. Then I came across Ipswitch s WhatsUp Gold, explained Netrinsic managing director, Keith Thompson. I was particularly impressed with the graphical mapping facility and the ability to alert via a number of devices.
WhatsUp Gold is Ipswitch s mapping, monitoring, notification, and reporting software that provides a detailed view of a network to help network administrators better understand and manage network resources. When a device or service is down, it sends an alarm via e-mail, pager, desktop alarm, or voice so that corrective actions may be taken with minimal interruption of network service.
WhatsUp Gold saves me manpower as I don t need to have someone constantly watching the network, said Thompson. I started using voice alarms at first, but then got WhatsUp Gold to alert me with an e-mail to my mobile [phone] via SMS through Genie s mobile Internet service, which as well as being cheaper provides me with more detailed information, allowing me to make a rapid correct decision instead of an assumption.
In Thompson s line of work, maintaining a high percentage of uptime is very important. If an ISP is regularly down then a customer will quickly choose a different provider, therefore it is imperative that we learn of any problems before the customer realizes they exist, he explains Thompson uses WhatsUp Gold to monitor a VoIP network in London, alerting him with an SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) flag if there is a call failure or any other mission-critical problems to the system.
It s interesting to see just how Netrinsic is utilizing WhatsUp Gold to monitor a network that historically has been unstable to help better service members of the ISPs, said managing director EMEA at Ipswitch, Paul White. WhatsUp Gold performs many tasks that network managers previously would have to do manually. WhatsUp Gold acts as an assistant to the network manager to maximize efficiency and identify ways to creatively head off problems and address them before they impact business operations.
