Armadillo's tool of choice for updating and maintaining clients' Web sites is WS_FTP Pro from Ipswitch, Inc. WS_FTP Pro is considered to be the most popular and powerful FTP client for transferring files over the Internet with millions of users worldwide. It's an efficient, fast, and secure way to transfer files, particularly when uploading files to Web sites, which can often be a cumbersome task.
The majority of data files I transfer fall into two classes, plain ASCII text documents, and binary image files, said Michael Gordon, owner of Armadillo Web Design. The ASCII files are mostly HTML documents and Perl script applications. The binary files are images supporting Web site design, and separate collections of images for linking to eBay auctions. Gordon is a long-time WS_FTP Pro user. He first began using the product in 1997 when he created his own personal Web site. He bought WS_FTP Pro based on a recommendation from his Internet Service Provider (Earthlink.net). The recommendation was a good one and Gordon has been hooked on WS_FTP Pro ever since.
Gordon says that the newest version of WS_FTP Pro is the best yet. When I click on the quick launch icon, WS_FTP Pro opens to the connection dialog box for the last server connection made. After the connection is made, the transfer window opens to the default folder and default directory for the hard drive and server, said Gordon. Additionally, the transfer manager in version 7.5 is great because it allows me to visually see the progress of the files transferred, pause the transfer, resume the transfer, and quit the transfer.
At the present time, Armadillo maintains seven Web sites for clients so Gordon uses WS_FTP Pro almost every day and is a real power user of the product. Recently, I tried the file manager with the auto transfer feature for the first time. I selected the base folder on the hard drive and the base directory on the server and easily uploaded six MBs of files, said Gordon. WS_FTP Pro worked like a Swiss watch. Perfect.
