What's New in WS_FTP Server 5.0

Workflow & Automation Rules Engine
Incorporate business rules and logic in WS_FTP Server using these built-in rules: Directory Created, File Deleted, File Downloaded, File Renamed, File Upload, Failed Login, Disk Quota

Step by step wizards
Create rules that trigger a notification via SMS, SMTP, pager and external program. You can also install, run and gain access to WS_FTP Server from any server, not just box that WS_FTP Server is running on.

CCC: SSL Connections with NAT & Firewall
Protect user data & connections running behind firewalls with Clear Command Channel (CCC). Configure IP address and port ranges when using PASV command and get enhanced performance when running behind firewalls and Network Address Translations (NAT) devices. Works with or without SSL.

Powerful Server Management Features
Ability to set users Home folders
As an administrator, you can now set any folder to be the user's Home Folder and set many users to the same home folder effectively allowing a shared group folder .

Example: ISP has a client with 5 employees and although each employee has an account, ISP wants to set limit on disk pace that can be used in aggregate by the 5 employees. This is done by setting the same folder as the home folder for all 5 employees

Universal Naming Convention (UNC) support
UNC is a standard method of naming files and other resources on a network. UNC format on Windows is typically: \\servername\sharename\path\

Example: A System Administrator needs to set user's home folders to a folder that is on a shared, remote network drive for security and management reasons. Previously, only the Host root drive or the folder WS_FTP Server automatically creates for each new user could be used.

Set disk space and bandwidth for entire groups or users
Disk quota has changed from KB to MB and you can now set maximum bandwidth settings per user or group. Example 1: ISP has a Gold package that includes 500MB of disk space. Admin can put users in this group and each user is automatically allotted 500MB of disk space.

Example 2: System admin wants to limit bandwidth consumption so they set the maximum download speed for each user on the Host.

New Tree View with updated icons
Makes WS_FTP Server more intuitive and easier to use.

Introduced recently in WS_FTP Server 4.0

WS_FTP Server 4.0 significantly increases file transfer security and management flexibility.

Increased Security
Protect user data and SSL connections running behind firewalls and other Network Address Translations (NAT) devices. Configure IP address and ports when using PASV command (with or without SSL) for better performance with firewalls and new NAT devices.

Greater control and flexibility over user access
Limit access to valuable data with the ability to create SSL certificates and a Trusted Authorities database on a per host basis.

Enhanced folder permissions
Set separate permissions on sub folders pointed to by Virtual Folders. The permissions model now allows users (on a per host basis) to select any folder on the system and assign specific permissions for that folder. You can also propagate to all sub folders.

Greater per-user control and data protection
You now have the ability to block file uploads, downloads, deletions, renaming, and directory creation on a per user basis. You can also setup rules automatically triggered by a specified event such as the uploading of a .exe file, etc. |

Support in locking users to home folders using scripts
Administrators who wish to lock users to their home folder using scripts can now accomplish this faster utilizing the Command Line Utility.

File lock during upload
Prevents users from downloading a file before it is fully uploaded to the server.

Encryption strength and name are now logged
You can verify the encryption strength and name of the encryption that's been negotiated for a given session.

Greater performance gain when connecting over SSL
(released in WS_FTP Server version 4.01 - 8/1/03)

Management Flexibility
Log Viewing and Real-Time Updating from within the Server Manager
You can now view and manage all log files for a specified directory in a single location. Also, the view of the current day's log file on the local system can be updated every two seconds.

Add host command line utility
New Command Line utility allows you to add, modify, configure and delete Hosts via the user interface or through the command line interface. Using the command line utility, you can also automate common host management tasks by coding and running scripts.

A host admin can now set options for the host remotely
(released in WS_FTP Server version 4.01 - 8/1/03)

Set default user settings
Administrators can now set default host and user level options once and then have them automatically apply to all new users added from that point on.

Session Manager is more accessible and convenient
The Session Manager will automatically login administrators to their local system so they can access the session manager.

Configurable Auto Refresh timer in Session Manager
Within the Session Manager, you can now choose from 5 different refresh periods ranging from 30 seconds to 120 seconds. Each time the timer expires, the Session Manager refreshes the active connections on the server providing greater flexibility and control.
